Globalisation

  • The process of international integration arising from the interchange and exchange of products, ideas, politics, and popular culture.  Globalisation is also seen as a way that the international boundaries that once existed are broken down by the advent of new technologies
  • The way in which media can be shared, viewed globally across different media platforms e.g. social media channels.  It allows users to connect and interact with each other instantly, wherever they are globally 
  • Social media has contributed to this, with the way in which users of the network can connect in an instant 

Advantages

- Quick connection and contact with friends, families or anyone 

  • Can damage mental health 
  • Cyberbullying 
  • Negative media can be shared and created (consumers and prosumers)
  • Fun way to showcase the things you want 
  • Easy to post
  • Inappropriate content can be accessed so easily as there is no regulation
  • Censorship is different in different countries 
  • Accessible, anytime, anyplace, any device and for anyone 
  • Black box devices (phones, laptops, etc.)
  • Once something is out there it can be accessed for the rest of the time.  E.g. personal information, data, images or videos 
  • A digital footprint is permanent 
  • Provides entertainment and escapism through channels e.g. Tiktok, Instagram 
  • Dangerous viruses, hackers
  • GDPR breaches

Citizens journalists:


  • John Simpson: In his autobiography, A Mad World, My Masters, BBC war correspondent John Simpson described how, before the advent of digital technology, newsreel would have to be taken out of wartorn countries by going to the nearest airport and asking travel to take back with them on an outbound flight
  • the way in which audiences utilize the function of social media to instantly communicate ideas to others
  • Citizen journalists can now publish thoughts, comments, photographs, and videos instantaneously, sharing them globally.  This has revolutionized how we see the world around us, and how news is reported.  It's no longer solely in the hands of news/media conglomerates

The Global Village:

  • The way in which the web connects people from all over the web 
  • Community-created over the web 
  • The term was coined by Marshall McLuhan in 1964. Basing his theories on the rise of television, he suggested new technologies could lead to a library network where people could access all manner of information 
  • This was realized with the advent of the internet and Web 2.0 Geographical boundaries have been eroded as a result 
  • WebUtopians, such as David Gauntlett, celebrate the potential for collaboration and connectivity with new technologies.  They believe online and social media technologies will benefit the world, allowing societies to come together
  • Electronic agora- a term coined by Rheingold in 1991-is used to describe online meeting spaces, such as focus and chat rooms, where people can discuss topics, ideas, and ways to achieve collaboration of projects
  • Open-source- material that can be used or altered by companies as they wish 
  • eSports- virtual sports that are run on an electronic system, including MMORPGs. eSports communications have developed to such an extent that users come together in stadium venues to compete 

Soundcloud - how it has benefited music producers 

  • everyone can post work they have produced - artists big or small and any quality of work
  • works as a platform to be discovered

  • multi-platinum recording artists and random kids recording beats in their bedrooms 
  • unique space for work and finding work 
  • people can self promote and grow
  • In 2012, Snoop Dogg discovered Polish artist Iza Lach via SoundCloud. He was so interested in what he heard, he flew out to Poland, recorded what Wahlforss said was "nearly a hundred" songs
Kickstarter:
  • Crowdfunding is a major way in which contemporary projects in all business sectors have been set up in the last 10 years
  • Launched in 2009, Kickstarter now has an average of 25,000 projects per year.  Musi, video games, film production, and television have all benefited

Youtube tutorials:
  • A way in which individuals are sharing ideas via social media channels.  This is a good example of globalization, where users across the globe can access content posted by other users (prosumers).  OFten, these are ver niche-see primitive tech
