Trolling/Cyber-trolling:

• When an individual/company is persistently targeted in a negative way online, usually through social media channels 
• The number of social media platforms available has led to a proliferation in this, as has the fact that users enjoy a degree of anonymity when positioning via social media sites 

Case Study:  Ariana Grande 

• After she split with the rapper boyfriend Mac Miller, and then later died through a drug overdose, Grande was trolled online.  As a result, she disabled her Instagram comments for a time

Cyber-bullying:

• When an individual is targeted online through hurtful or threatening message, generally online 

Hailee Lamberth Case

Another 13-year-old took her life due to cyberbullying. She’s suffered from epilepsy and her classmates taunted her for that. This in-school bullying continued through online platforms and forums. They’d often tell herself to kill herself because of her condition.

At one point, a classmate left her a voicemail saying “I hope you died.” Hailee couldn’t take the bullying anymore and killed herself.

Negative Body Image:

• Obsessing over e.g Instagram posts of others can lead to feelings of negative self worth-both from the lives influencers purport to lead (they only show the good stuff) and from the images themselves, many of which have had filters added, or have been excessively photoshopped.  
• Some lenses of cameras, due to their size, distort the shape and size of the nose, again leading to feelings of negativity regarding appearance

Moral panic:  public anxiety and/or alarm in response to something that happened within society 

The negative images of social media?

The negative image of social media makes children compares themselves to peers and celebrities and this links into the term of moral panic, as if this is not the case they would consider themselves

Backlash against bands 

• social media has enabled consumers to voice their own opinions on a range of issues 
• these include big business, whos marketing/or products they object to 
• an example of this is Kim Kardashian 'Kimono' line of underwear 
•  which was said to "disrespect traditional modest Japanese clothing" rather than skimpy shapewear that shows all aspects of the body
• in 2018 H&M received serious backlash over having a black child model a jumper which said "coolest monkey in the world", commonly known as a racial slur

Decreased Productivity:

• Whilst many businesses use social networking sites to find and communicate with clients, the sites can also prove a great distraction to employees who may show more interest in what their friends are posting online than in work tasks. There is also the grave risk of individuals commenting about their place of work online.  

A false sense of connection:

• Whilst Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be applied to show why people use social media, such sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful realization we foster in the real world.

Loss of privacy:

• social networking sites encourage people to be more public about their personal lives.

Imperialism:

• One criticism of globalization is that it leads to imperialism-that is the way in which predominantly western popular culture is promoted o less developed countries.  This may, in turn, lead to the gradual erosion of those less developed countries.
